Associated posture in Araona
14h-15h30

This talk will provide a description of associated posture in Araona, a Takanan language of Bolivia. Associated posture refers to constructions where there is a paradigm of morphemes that express posture that combine with a lexical verb semantically. Araona has four posture verbs; e … ani ‘sitting’; e…neti ‘standing’; e…ja ‘lying’; e…bade ‘hanging’. All of these morphemes have corresponding lexical verbs. After describing posture verbs in their morphosyntactic context (what does a ‘suffix’ mean in Araona?), I describe the semantic overlap between each of the ‘suffixal / circumfixal’ posture verbs and their ‘root’ counterparts. The root posture verbs express a proper subset of the semantic potential of the suffixal version. The suffixal versions express everything the root can express and more abstract semantic categories like progressive, durative, and possibly anterior. The suffix e…bade ‘hanging’, however, appears to have identical semantics with the verb root. I also consider whether it is accurate to consider the posture verbs as imperfectives, either in its ‘backgrounding’ sense or its narrative time nonadvancement sense.
