mar. 15/11/2022 Séminaire DiLiS : Assessing structural outcomes of language contact and language shift: The case of Southern Tungusic
14h-15h30
MSH-LSE, salle Ennat Léger (14 avenue Berthelot)
Conférence de :
  • Natalia Stoynova

dans le cadre DILIS

Notez le changement de salle:

Le séminaire se tiendra en salle Ennat Léger (MSH-LSE, 14 avenue Berthelot)

(et non en salle Albretch comme annoncé précédemment)

Abstract:

In the talk, I will discuss the data coming from my fieldwork on Nanai and Ulcha (Southern Tungusic). These are two-closely related languages, spoken in the Russian Far East. Both languages are endangered: all speakers are of older generations, they all speak Russian and nowadays use Russian more actively than Nanai and Ulcha. The talk will focus on outcomes of intense contact with Russian and language shift in grammar. I will present three case-studies:

- Morphological adaptation of Russian nouns and verbs (in Nanai and Ulcha)

- Adverbial clauses with Russian conjunctions (in Nanai)

- Morphosyntactic strategies of code-switching (in Nanai and Ulcha compared to some other languages of Russia)

These three topics will be discussed from the point of view of (in)congruence (or structural (in)compatibility) as a mechanism regulating structural restrictions on contact-induced phenomena (cf. Weinreich 1953: 25; Campbell & Harris 1995: 123-125; Myers-Scotton 2002; Aikhenvald 2007: 32; Sebba 2009; Besters-Dinger et al. 2014). The general hypothesis to be tested is that it is easier to borrow / switch if there is congruence between contacting languages (in this particular fragment of language system or generally). The data in question seem to be insightful in this perspective, because both Russian and Southern Tungusic are languages with rich morphology and their grammars differ a lot.

lun. 28/11/2022 Multilingualism and language contact in Northeastern Siberia
10h00-11h30
MSH-LSE, salle Berty Albrecht
Conférence de :
  • Maria Pupynina (Institute for Linguistic Studies, St. Petersburg)

dans le cadre DILIS

Vast cold lands Northeastern Siberia were historically inhabited by small-scale communities, tribes of nomads, fishers and hunters. This region used to be the gates for Americas’ settlement, and peoples and languages repeatedly replaced each other moving towards and backwards by Bering Strait/ land bridge and adjust seas. My area of interest are the contacts (i.a. cross-continent) of northeastern Siberian communities manifested in language features and language practices, the latter potentially explaining/supporting the former.

In this talk, I will concentrate on contact studies of two regions where I worked. One is the lowland of Kolyma river where five languages belonging to five different linguistic stocks are spoken: Tundra Yukaghir , Even, Chukchi, Yakut, and Russian. For the local communities having a command of five languages was the norm during the big part of 20th century. The second region is Chukchi Peninsula, a tiny easternmost end of Eurasia, where during the last century Chukchi, Chaplinski, Sirenik, Naukan, Inupiaq, English Hawaii pidgin, and Russian languages were spoken. Multilingualism here was a more distant and less widespread practice, which was continuously reducing during the 20th century.

ZOOM MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO TECHNICAL PROBLEMS

Abstract

This talk is based on a paper that will be presented at ALT14 in Austin. It describes the functions of the filler mashti as used in Northern Pastaza Kichwa [ISO 639-3: qvz], a variety of Amazonian Kichwa (Quechuan, Ecuador-Peru). Using a video corpus of naturalistic language and taking into account multimodal and prosodic signals; I show that mashti has multiple functions. It is used as a hesitation interjection, as a 'whatchamacallit' type placeholder for nominals, and as a resumptive pro-verb which anaphorically reiterates a previously uttered action or event. I propose that multiple functions of mashti are the result of semantic bleaching and a broadening of semantic scope and pragmatic repurposing.
