Scientific framework and objectives

The goal of my PhD thesis is to develop a grammatical description of Swo, a Bantu language spoken in Cameroon (Central Africa). Swo is a language with an oral tradition and has its own alphabet since a couple of years only. The research done on the languages in the Northern region of the Bantu area, of which Swo is a part, still contains some important gaps, so my project aims at filling up the gap on Swo.
The grammar is based on the data I collect myself in the field and will contain elements of the phonology, tonology and morpho-syntax of the language, placed in a typological–functional perspective. A sociological description of the community will either be added as an introduction or published separately. In response to the community’s request, I also work on a Swo–French lexicon and a booklet with traditional tales accompanied by images made by Cameroonian artists.
