Scientific framework and objectives

This thesis started in October 2018 within a Doctoral contract 3LA, and it is supervised by Alice Vittrant. It will provide a grammatical description of the Black Hmong language of the Hmong-Mien language family, spoken in Vietnam. The objective of this thesis is to produce a first descriptive grammar of the language by placing it typologically among the world languages, areally as a Southeast Asian language and genetically within the Hmong-Mien language family. This thesis will cover both phonology and morphosyntax. The phonological part of the thesis will present an inventory of the phonemes of the Black Hmong language (consonantal and vocalic systems), partially based on my first analysis presented in my Master’s thesis. This description will be completed by a thorough analysis of the tonal system, and particularly, the tone sandhi phenomena. The morphosyntactic part will present the different word categories, and will cover the nominal, verbal, and phrase domains. I will pay a particular attention to lexical composition, nominal classification, verbal serialization, tense-aspect-mood (TAM), and the expression of space. This grammar will rely on first hand data, collected during field studies in the Black Hmong community living in Sapa,Northern Vietnam.
