Scientific framework and objectives

This project is a collaboration with Lev Michael's team at University of California, Berkeley. It aims at a better understanding of the historical relationships among the Tupí-Guaraní family, an important group of indigenous South American languages. The project aims to assemble comparative data on the morphology of about 30 Tupí-Guaraní languages and apply innovative methods for inferring the evolution and diversification of these languages, based on computational approaches originally developed in evolutionary biology. The resulting model of the diversification will considerably refine our understanding of the relationships among these languages, yielding new insights into their history, as well as into the history of their speakers.
