Scientific framework and objectives

One of the characteristics of the variety of the world’s languages is that a large majority are currently in danger of becoming extinct. Krauss calculates that 90% of the world’s languages will have disappeared by the end of the 21st century. This phenomenon will have a certain impact on the nature of the language communities which still speak these languages, on fieldwork methods and descriptive strategies to be developed in this framework, and on the nature of linguistic observations brought back from the field and the integration of these observations into linguistic debates. In a number of cases from the field, at least in Latin America, the challenge posed by documentation of these endangered languages is accompanied by requests from the community for their revitalisation, which involves pedagogical research adapted to their particular sociolinguistic situation. The objective of this research action is to contribute to thinking on the phenomenon of the rapid disappearance of a large majority of the world’s languages, and fieldwork conditions for the description and documentation of these languages, in particular concerning the large variety of speakers, data collection methods, relationships between the linguist, speakers and the community, and evaluation of language vitality levels. At the present time, these research topics are part of the project « Afrique, Amérique Latine, Langues en Danger (AALLED) ».
