Comparative and diachronic study of the vowels of the B20 lects - quantitative and systemic approaches

Scientific framework and objectives

Stem-final vowels (but also vowels in non-final positions, although to a lesser extent) often lack straightforward correspondences in the language varieties classified as Bantu B20 (Kota-Kele group). Although a quantitative and systemic approach has proven successful in retrieving the ancient inherited traits and in establishing a comprehensive overview of the innovating processes which shaped the phonology of these language varieties, one crucial question remains: which historical, sociolinguistic and non linguistic mechanisms gave rise to this lack of correspondence? The present study focuses on contact-related phenomena.
