Founded in 1994, the Dynamique Du Langage (DDL) research unit explores the interface between the diversity of the world’s languages and the universality of human linguistic capacity. Our research lies at the heart of major challenges of our times: from understanding language development in children and in language pathologies to issues of language documentation and vitality and the investigation of the origins of language. The research unit is structured around two research axes (DENDY and DILIS) and a transversal theme (COVALI).
The Dynamique du Langage is looking for a Full-Stack Research Engineer on a 2-month fixed-term contract starting on September 15, 2026.
The position is attached to the DiLiS research team and focuses on the development of interoperable linguistic data infrastructures using the CLLD framework (Python, SQL, web development).

What can words tell us about the history of cacao domestication?
Drawing on a dataset of 336 Indigenous languages of the Americas, an article by Matthias Urban shows that words for cacao preserve traces of very ancient linguistic and cultural contacts. By combining historical linguistics with statistical methods, the study provides new evidence supporting the spread of both cacao and its terminology from Amazonia to Mesoamerica.
