Solon is a Northern Tungusic language spoken in Hulunbuir, China. This talk will present the outcomes of sociolinguistic fieldwork conducted within the Solon community in the Ewenke Autonomous Banner, a key Solon-speaking region. There are around 10,000 Solon members (out of a total of around 25,000) in Ewenke Autonomous Banner with strong social pressure from the dominant languages Mongolian and Mandarin. Even though Solon continues to be transmitted as a first language to children, current proficiency levels are concerning. A comprehensive survey based on a sociolinguistic questionnaire reveals a declining language ecology. Firstly, linguistic diversity is dwindling among the younger generation, resulting in limited proficiency in minority languages. Secondly, the use of the Solon is limited to use inside the family, as Mandarin dominates social interactions. Despite a positive attitude towards their heritage language, a drastic decline is observed among the younger generation (13-25 age). In conclusion, this study suggests that the endangerment level of the Solon language is rapidly approaching the 'definitely endangered' status, underscoring the urgency of preservation efforts.
